Let's get together on December 11

The rising hills, the slopes,
of statistics
lie before us.
the steep climb
of everything, going up,
up, as we all
go down.

In the next century
or the one beyond that,
they say,
are valleys, pastures,
we can meet there in peace
if we make it.

To climb these coming crests
one word to you, to
you and your children:

stay together
learn the flowers
go light

~ For the Children, by Gary Snyder

We're going to get together for the children on December 11 at 1pm. And for us grownups who might need some time in nature, some time together. We're going to explore a very low tide at Point Pinole Regional Shoreline. It will be a Kings Tide which is special and unique and worth knowing about. We're going to walk, talk, exhale, explore, and be together.

Join us! Invite your neighbors, friends, family. Invite classmates and colleagues. All are welcome. The beach is big. There is room for everyone.

Details:
  • Sunday, December 11 from 1pm till sunset (about 4:45)
  • If it's raining, we'll post our plans to the website and Facebook
  • Point Pinole Regional Park in Richmond. Directions are here.
  • We'll meet in the parking lot and walk less than a mile to the beach.
  • Instructions to get to the beach: Walk up the hill to the right of the parking lot. You'll find a bridge across the train tracks. Cross the bridge. Continue up the paved road towards the playground. Turn left at the playground towards the water. Walk south towards the water. If you're after 1:30pm or so, listen for loud children.
  • Directions to Point Pinole are here.
  • Bring snacks, water, a towel or two, and a change of clothes.
  • Bring shoes with which you can walk in water.
  • Oh, and there's mud.
  • Please RSVP here

Kings and Queens on Sunday, December 11 at 1pm

Were you there when we did this:

We were enjoying the very, very low tide that comes with a Kings Tide. It was January 2015 and that's the very, very big beach at Point Pinole Regional Park.

And we're going to do it again.

Join us on Sunday, December 11, 2016 from 1:00pm till sunset at Point Pinole Regional Park. There will be another Kings Tide which you can learn more about here. I think it's lame that it's a male tide, so I'm adding the Queen. I dare you to tell me that's scientifically incorrect.

RSVP here

It's a short walk from the parking lot to the beach, and then it's a loooonnnggg walk out to the water. There are rocks to explore, crabs to find, mud to dig, and things to build with driftwood. This is one of my favorite things ever. You want to be there.

I will post more information as we get closer to the date. Stay tuned for details, but put it on your calendar now.

This is what Outside Kids looks like

50 people decided to spend today outside for our first Election2016 Healing Hike. This is what it looked like:

(that arm!)

Want to go on your own? Go! It's a great 3 mile loop. See here for a map and details.

Another Outside Kids outing will happen in December. Stay tuned for details.

Take good care of yourself, your family, and your community.

With love and respect,
Annie

All are welcome. Really, EVERYONE is welcome on Sunday.

You're invited! You, yes you! Everyone is welcome and invited and encouraged to be there. Everyone.

This Sunday, November 13, 2016 at 11am we're going to the north side of Mount Diablo for a 3 mile loop along creeks, through oak trees, and in big wide open spaces.

I'm asking for RSVPs for the first time in 7 years. I want a sense for how many people will be there (leading 10 people is way different than 50 people), and how old the kids are (leading 3 year olds is way different than 10 year olds).

Please RSVP here

We will meet at the Falls Hike Trailhead which is at the end of Regency Ave in Clayton. See the map to the trailhead here. Park on the street and meet us at the end of the road.

We will walk a clockwise loop up the Donner Canyon Road, up the hill on Donner Cabin Trail to Tick Wood Trail, and then turn right to walk down the Back Creek Trail. There's a short hill, but otherwise this is a pretty mellow 3mile walk.

Here's the map that I drew for your kids to use. Print it and bring it, or just pull it up on your phone.

But if you prefer a map made by an actual cartographer, there's this:

Bring lunch, snacks (regardless if they're 3 or 10 years old, kids are always hike more happily if they have a snack), and water. We'll have lunch either at Donner Cabin or up in the oak trees on the ridge between the two creeks.

If you have little, little kids:
  • There's a great option of walking up to the Donner Cabin and back. It's 2 miles round trip, and easy.
  • The Donner Canyon Road and Back Creek Trail are both fire roads and okay for off-road strollers. The Donner Cabin Trail and Tick Wood trails are single track and not suitable for strollers.
Hope to see you outside. It will be good for us all.

Please RSVP today

You're invited to a Healing Hike on Sunday, Nov 13

This election is almost over. And everyone in this country, including our kids, is affected by the tension this election has created. There are nasty words about bad hombres on the radio, TV, and internet. There's a whole lotta toxicity in our world right now.

There is something we can do about it: go outside. Nature provides all kinds of healing benefits. Read this study from Stanford. And this in the New York Times. There are more studies I could share, but I hope you get the point.

So....

You're invited! On Sunday, November 13, 2016 at 11am we're going to the north side of Mount Diablo for a 3 mile loop along creeks, through oak trees, and in big wide open spaces.

Will you join us? All are invited including your friends, classmates, family, and colleagues. I'm asking for RSVPs for the first time in 7 years. I want a sense for how many people will be there (leading 10 people is way different than 50 people), and how old the kids are (leading 3 year olds is way different than 10 year olds).

I will post a hand-drawn map of our route here on the website later this week. Print and bring it with you. Or save it to your phone (coverage is decent).

Hope to see you outside. It will be good for us all.
