Somewhere familiar, something new

Sometimes I wonder if I should keep going with Outside Kids. Would anyone notice if I just stopped? What impact am I having? Why am I doing this? Maybe life would be a little quieter if I simplified and took this off of the calendar and my list of things to do.

But then I have an experience that revs my engine again. I see how disconnected we are to the natural world and how overly connected we are to machines with screens. There's this and this. And this too. It's not just the kids. It's us grownups too. And so with all of that... I'm back and ready to plan the next adventure...

We're going to Point Pinole, a tried and true favorite, on Sunday, June 1 at 10:30am. It's close (relatively), it's beautiful, it's on the water, and it's easy. We have sailed boats, laid our claim, and waved to trains.

But we haven't been out to the pier. There is a point at Point Pinole and on that point is a pier. It juts out into San Pablo Bay and we need to see it. Right near it is a long-retired "dynamite blast and burning bunker" which definitely needs to be explored, too. We will lunch out there somewhere, and then either walk back or take the shuttle bus. There's a handy little van that takes people - mostly fishermen - back and forth from the parking lot to the pier. It leaves the pier at 12:15, 1:15, 2:15 and 3:00. And we'll jump on one of those if our legs won't make it back on their own power. But I think we can do it.

Will you join us? Before school gets out and we go our separate ways for the summer? Bring the family and friends and classmates and neighbors. Let's have fun.
