We were together, I forget the rest

We may have found the tagline for Outside Kids. Or maybe our mission statement. I don't know what it is/will be, but we're using it.

It was a fun day outside exploring Black Diamond Mines. The sun shone, the air was warm and we were together. If you haven't been to Black Diamond Mines, I highly recommend it. Especially before May or June when it's HOT and very dry. Go. Now.

Our next Outside Kids adventure will be on April 14 when we head to a favorite spot: Sunol Regional Wilderness. We go every year and every year we fall in love with it again. Hope to see you then!

We're on!

Yes, it's going to rain this weekend (yay!) but I don't think it will tomorrow morning. So let's go outside! Let's go to Black Diamond Mines and explore. We'll meet at the end of the road, at the second parking lot, at 10:30am. Details below.

The map for Saturday's outing

Benny drew you all a map for Black Diamond Mines. Cars are at the bottom, apple for the lunch spot is at the top. Alex wrote you directions: find a gate, then find a train track, find a good lunch spot, walk back to the parking lot. You now have everything you need...

This Saturday! If it's not pouring...

The weather forecast for the week looks like this:

I interpret this to mean that it might rain but it's not likely. Especially this winter since it's been so dry. So we're going to plan to go to Black Diamond Mines on Saturday, March 30 at 10:30am and see what happens. I will post again here on Friday afternoon if the weather forecast changes and it's going to be so nasty cold and wet that we won't have any fun.

In the meantime, let's think that we are going and that we are going to have fun. Sound good? Black Diamond Mines is a really fun place to explore when you have little legs. It's a world away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and so us with long legs will love it too. We went last year (see here) and had a blast (get it? a blast at an old mine?!). This year the Greathouse Visitor Center is open which is going to knock some socks off those little legs.

Will you be mine?

Our next Outside Kids adventure will be underground at the Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve on Saturday, March 30. We went there last February and walked all of .81 miles. We had a blast with caves and sandy soil and I don't even remember what else.

This year we'll do all that AND go into the Greathouse Visitor Center which is actually inside the mountain. It's been closed for a few years and so this is an added bonus which I'm sure kids will enjoy (I'm looking forward to it, too).

We'll meet in the parking lot at 10:30am and head towards the visitor center first. After we'll go explore the Chapparal Loop Trail. We will go up to the Hazel Atlas Portal, Powder Magazine and Stope (Numbers 5, 6 and 7 on the park's map). As always my hand-drawn and not-ever-to-scale maps will be available and will be on our silver Prius' windshield for any late-comers.

Yeah, it's a ways away from urban or suburban Bay Area. But I tell ya, it's worth it. When you get to the park, drive all the way to the end of the road. There's a visitor center on the left as you're driving in - don't stop there. Keep on going till you can't drive no more. Directions and more are here.
